Ghost Orders: The Scheme That Made Sales Disappear

On paper, everything balanced. Orders were being entered, customers were paying cash, and receipts looked normal. But revenue still wasn’t matching up. Something didn’t add up.
During an Altivue Insights evaluation, we discovered the trick: employees were entering customer orders into the POS system, collecting the cash, and then deleting the order before it finalized. The money went into their pocket while the record of the sale vanished. This “ghost order” scam is one of the more sophisticated tactics in the hospitality world — hard to spot without the right eyes.
We paired on-site observation with system data and found the evidence the client needed. After tightening reconciliation procedures and mandating supervisor approval for deleted orders, the losses stopped. The client regained control, and trust in the operation was restored
